Frequently Asked Questions

A medical appraisal is a facilitated, self-reflection supported by information gathered from the full scope of a doctors’ practice. Annual appraisal is a GMC (the General Medical Council) statutory requirement for all doctors with a license to practice.

It is a facilitated self-review meeting between a GMC licensed doctor (appraisee) and an appraiser to reflect on the appraisee’s full scope of practice to demonstrate they are remaining up-to-date and fit to practice. This also helps to plan the professional development and identify learning needs. It enables your responsible officer of a designated body to make revalidation recommendations to GMC.

The appraisal is completed in 3 stages: inputs into appraisals, confidential discussion and outputs from appraisal. An appraisal is not an assessment or examination.

Revalidation is the process by which all GMC registered doctors with a license to practice have to demonstrate to the GMC that they are fit to practise. All doctors who wish to retain their license to practice need to participate in revalidation through a regular appraisal based on GMC’s core guidance- Good Medical Practice. Revalidation runs over a 5 year cycle and doctors will need to revalidate only once in every cycle. Most doctors will have connection to a RO responsible officer of your designated body or suitable person who will make revalidation recommendations to GMC. A multisource feedback (from patients and colleagues) is required once in a 5 year revalidation cycle.

We can advise doctors which revalidation route is suitable for you. The rout to your revalidation will depend on your revalidation connection type.

No unless you do not wish to renew or retain your license to practice. If you wish to retain your GMC license to practice and continue to provide clinical services in the UK, it is a statutory requirement to participate in annual appraisals.

The individual who conducts your appraisal must be a GMC registered practitioner with a license to practice and appropriately trained in the knowledge and skills to carry out an appraisal. The appraiser you choose does not have to come from the same specialty from which you are clinically practising. They must not have a conflict of interest with you and avoid any appearance of bias during appraisal.

The supporting information should be from UK practice. GMC has never mandated a specific amount of CPD or credits per year. The aim of the appraisal process is to capture the relevant supporting information that covers your scope of practice such as your CPD activities, workplace activities, quality improvement activities, compliments, complaints, significant events, learning activities, clinical governance activities, job planning process etc. Gathering supporting information is a cumulative process over a 5 year revalidation cycle and you will be expected to demonstrate during your appraisal you have kept up-to-date with appropriate spread of meaningful learning that covers your scope of practice. Some doctors find simple record keeping and reflection on an ongoing basis in some sort of learning log or e-portfolio. Verbal reflection can provide acceptable supporting information. Your college or faculty should also be able to advise you on the standards required for your specialty.
